Diversity is a core value at Poyner Spruill. The firm believes that promoting diversity and equal opportunity is essential to serving the needs of our client base. The varied backgrounds and experiences of Poyner Spruill’s attorneys and staff enable us to find strength in our differences, attract and retain talented and creative people, and promote innovative solutions for our clients.

The firm’s Diversity Committee focuses on fostering an environment in which differences are appreciated and valued. The Committee includes a member of the Management Committee, the firm’s Managing Partner, the Partner in charge of Associate development, the Chair of the Summer Associate Committee, as well as partners, associates and staff. Members of the Committee have identified goals and actions steps to guide the firm’s efforts in its Diversity Plan. The plan focuses on supporting the advancement of diverse attorneys, actively recruiting diverse persons, and participating in bar associations and community activities that advance diversity in the legal profession and the communities in which we live and work.

Diversity has always been a key element of our strategic vision. For our multifaceted legal practice, diversity within the firm is important to the quality of legal work and client service we provide. Our active membership and participation in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) allows our attorneys to participate in the Law School Mentoring Program, a program in which more than 20 of our attorneys mentor diverse students from local law schools.

Additionally, individual attorneys work closely with local minority bar associations and other organizations supporting diversity including:

  • The North Carolina Bar Association’s Minorities in the Profession Committee, where the firm is a participating employer in the 1L Summer Associate Program.
  • The Diversity Committee of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys.
  • The Echo Foundation, which was co-founded in 1996 by Elie Wiesel. Professor Wiesel was a Holocaust survivor and won the Nobel Peace Prize in the 1980’s. The mission of Echo is to promote tolerance and diversity, primarily through education.
  • Women Givers of Nash/ Rocky Mount - founding member - philanthropic group focused on promoting charitable support of women and children by women.
  • Wilson Family YMCA, supporting diversity through scholarship programs.
  • Pro bono asylum practice for individuals and their families, who, without asylum in the United States by the Department of Homeland Security, face serious persecution in their home countries.
  • Raleigh Chamber of Commerce – Working Mothers’ Taskforce
  • The NC AIDS Action Network which advocates regarding legislative and policy issues, and provides education, training and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Women in International Trade – devoted to enhancing the careers of individuals in international trade.
  • NCSU college of Management, as professional mentors, within the course (M100) designed to educate students on diversity in the workforce and encourage their participation in and understanding of diversity-related initiatives.
  • International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC), the first international professional association dedicated to enhancing the professional status of women in all disciplines of insolvency and restructuring.

In addition, the firm regularly serves as a sponsor of conferences, meetings and retreats focused on increasing diversity in the legal profession, such as:

  • Regional conferences and academic retreats for the Southern Region of the National Black Law Students Association (SRBLSA) and local BLSA chapters
  • Programs geared toward increasing diversity in private practice, including “In Defense of Diversity: The Critical Role of White Male Partners,” co-sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys
  • The North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities Human Resources Group Roundtable

Our Voices - Cultivating Leadership: An Intimate Discussion with Leaders in our Communities


The Poyner Spruill Diversity Committee is celebrating Black History Month by hosting an intimate panel discussion with key leaders who have been successful in the legal field. The hour-long discussion will focus on how young minorities can navigate the legal industry and position themselves as leaders in their respective communities. Diversity is critical for an organization to be able to adapt in a fast-changing environment. The panel will shed light on the challenges of attaining meaningful diversity and create discussion and generate ideas on how to continue advancing diversity within the legal industry.

Eight attorneys earn distinction in Business North Carolina's 2019 Legal Elite
